774000 jobs: Festus Kayemo Denied Senators Slots (Video): The minister of state, labor and employment, Mr. Festus Kayemo has accused the senate committee over alleged hijacking of 774000 jobs, which he proposed to the senate.
The senate in a bid to resolve the situation, called for a closed-door meeting, but the minister bluntly refused as he insisted that he will not speak until the press is present
According to the minister, the senate committee started mounting pressure on him to produce the people get employed from each state. He said they wanted him to tell them how the programme would be conducted from state to state.
“The 774,000 jobs are within a special public works programme (SPWP) targeted at recruiting 1,000 persons in each of the 774 local government areas to be implemented by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE)”
“The programme, which is targeted at creating jobs for unskilled persons in rural areas, will last three months (October to December).
The workers are expected to clear and protect public infrastructure in rural areas while they earn N20,000 each within the three months”
The minister while briefing newsmen said he told the senate committee: “You cannot ask me to do that as that would be taking over the power of the president”.
“I did not insult them I only insisted that we should hold the meeting publicly and nothing else”.
